Fluctuations in pressure and density are known as pressure waves. Shockwaves are a specific kind of pressure wave with the characteristic pressure profile of a very short rise time (in the nanosecond range) and high peak pressure.
Electrohydraulic shockwaves originate from an electrical discharge in water. The discharge causes an evaporation of water, a gaseous bubble and subsequent implosion which generates a shockwave.
The shockwaves are released into a curved ellipsoidal reflector which focuses the shockwaves onto the treatment area.
TRT utilizes traditional shockwave
technology in its urology and orthopedic devices - the LithoGold™ and
OrthoGold. In urology, the physics associated with focused
shockwaves are required to destroy kidney stones and in orthopedics
they are required to sufficiently penetrate bone in order to start the
cascade of biologic effects. Shockwaves can be focused to
different penetration depths depending on the geometry of the
lens. For example, kidney stones require the deepest penetration
(up to 16 cm) whereas non-healing fractures, which are closer to the
surface of the skin, require less penetration.
What are SoftWaves™?
SoftWaves™ share most of the
characteristics of shockwaves with the primary exception that a
parabolic reflector is utilized rather than an ellipsoidal
reflector. The parabolic reflector produces unfocused or parallel
waves that remain unfocused in the patient.
Advantages of SoftWaves™
are that larger areas can be treated relatively pain-free
without the use of anesthesia.
Advantages of SoftWaves™ over focused shockwaves
The proven clinical effects of SoftWave Therapy are:
- Bactericidal effects
- Cellular production of NO (nitric oxide)
- The production of growth factors (VEG F, BMP's, OP's)
- Stem cell migration and activation
Another advantage is that SoftWaves™ do not cause cellular destruction, thus avoiding the typical bruising and bleeding associated with high-energy focused shockwave therapy, because SoftWave™ energy is dispersed to the body over a much larger area and is limited to levels insufficient to cause cellular damage.
TRT utilizes SoftWaves™ in its cardiology and dermatology devices and for all soft tissue pathologies in its CardioGold™, DermaGold™ and VetGold products.
